DJ Melzi

DJ Melzi’s soulful, Afrohouse/tech-influenced take on amapiano sets him apart. Born Tumelo Mphai in Kuruman, Northern Cape in 2001, Melzi first learned how to DJ at the age of six. His breakout song, 2019's “Ma2000s”, which he crafted at 17 years-old, paid homage to his Gen Z peers. He further entrenched his name with his 2020 offering, The Bomb, which yielded the hit singles “La Melza” and “Bayekele” (both featuring vocalist Mkeyz and producer Mphow69). In 2021’s A 19 Year Old King, Melzi explores broader themes such as colonialism (“Buza Abelungu”) and the forsaking of teachings (“Abazali”), while expanding his production palette with guitar riffs on tunes such as “Sele Wena” and “Melzi Wa Batho”.
