Dutch duo, Huminal, have charted a serene course across the choppy waters of the underground dance scene. At the vanguard of the movement with cutting edge sound and spine-tingling emotion, "We Dwell in the Past" for Proton Music in July 2016 was yet another stellar snapshot in a blue-chip portfolio. As Particles now commissions remixes of its own, iconic Hungarian and Australian producers rework the title track.
Through his Aeron Aether soubriquet, Gabor Kovacs has provided a rich historical backdrop to the progressive breaks and house movement. Early work for pioneering labels, Morphosis Records and Silk Digital, provided a platform for Kovacs to showcase the Aeron Aether name to immediate triumph. Classic tracks including "Lake in the Well", "Synthanelia" and "Searching for a Memory" became music that defined a genre, retaining considerable popularity some five or more years later. More recent work for Mango Alley and Silk Music illustrate Aeron Aether's continued relevance while a remix of Artem Kalalb's "Limb" for Particles in early 2016 showed a return to form after a quartet of remixes between 2008 and 2011.
Reworking Huminal, Aeron Aether's trademark sound is fully to the fore. Using the familiar melody to open the narrative, a wonderfully inventive reconfiguration of the original elements supplies a golden groove that bristles with energy and a new dynamism. A highly impressive work, Aeron Aether's passion, skill and technique are in full evidence.
Rich Curtis is a producer and DJ with a list of achievements and portfolio as long as the proverbial arm. Responsible for bringing superstar DJs including Hernan Cattaneo and Anthony Pappa to his Brisbane home, Curtis' performances behind the decks across his homeland's clubs and festivals have seen him play alongside countless heavyweights from John Digweed and Nick Warren to Marc Romboy and Vince Watson, as he continues to tour at home and in South America. A production career that began in 2010 immediately bore fruit with the debut, "Square Root" EP, appearing on Cid Inc.'s Replug imprint. Since then, a raft of original and production material has gone on to feature on Mesmeric, MNL and Cattaneo's Sudbeat. A regular on Proton Music marked by 2013's "Safety Thirst" EP and a clutch of high-profile reworks for the likes of Dousk and Silinder, a pair of Particles remixes for Kobana and fellow Australian, GMJ, are now accompanied by an accomplished third.
Taking a typically unique and intelligent approach to "We Dwell in the Past", a strong beat and elegant groove reveals itself over the course of the first movement as the pulsating, rasping bass of the original is chopped up to form a new rhythmic cadence. A beautiful string arrangement filters into listener consciousness and a breakdown full of additional production material paves the way for Curtis' remix to take on a new and unexpected melodic variation in the third movement with shimmering with new arpeggio sequence and chord progression.
As "We Dwell in the Past" once more, Aeron Aether and Rich Curtis point the way to a bright and vibrant future.
