Riding on the success of their debut release, Plexus return in the shape of label-boss Scarper's 'Unfurl EP'. Favouring infectious melodies & simple grooves, Unfurl is a piece of work which rewards the listener with a warm & deep sound, lending itself to being heard in its entirety, beginning to end. Last year Italo-disco luminaries 'Piatto' picked up his electro-tech track 'Hydromancer' for their legendary 'N.O.I.A.' imprint, which gained him such fans as Umek & Marco Bailey. With `Unfurl, Scarper showcases a lighter, more melodic side with a touch of nostalgia reminiscent of early 90's electronica & ambient-techno. Building slowly around 808 State-esque chords & analogue lead & bass, the EP gets off to an uplifting start with 'Surfing the Cosmic Belt' a colourful, melodic electro track full of fluttery FX & atmospheric noises. 'New Blue Noon' continues on a similar vibe but this time a steady disco beat drives along while hypnotic melodies sparkle & shimmer around it. A live favourite, 'Bubblecloud' bursts with elating energy & conjures up images of sun-soaked, smiley festival goers settling into the party spirit. A bouncy bassline sits warmly under catchy, floaty synths & 303-acid lines. On 'Arabesque', Scarper creates a harmonious, multi-layered sound spanning from organic background textures to dreamy bells & seamless synth melodies. The last original track on the EP is the beautiful 'Wavellite' which slows things down to pure ambience. Lush, emotive chords throb & wobble whilst distant atmospheric washes trickle around them. Signed to highly regarded R&S sub-label Apollo Records, rising ambient star Halftribe supplies a remix for 'Bubblecloud'. He recently turned in a remix for Karl Hyde of Underworld's new solo project & has an EP & album dropping on Apollo later this year. The catchy melodies of Bubblecloud remain a focal point but surrounded by washes of pads, distant vocals & backwards FX. ...
