- Mikie Smithers

It was as the embers of disco began to smolder and flicker out, as the '80s pop revolution was ignited, that Mikie Smithers grew up outside of Bakersfield, California. He grew up as somewhat of a self-proclaimed musical geek, classically trained in Piano and Saxophone. Raised by his grandparents in a small town surrounded by oil derricks and farmland, there weren't many distractions other than strip malls and flea markets. Music became his escape. It was in high school that he began to DJ his own parties. It was at the age of 21 when he first discovered new programs with digital effects that his musical outlook and aspirations quickly shifted. He would sit endlessly immersed in the new sounds and textures that were previously impossible, teaching himself to recreate the music he loved most. He was like an artist in apprenticeship, studying and attempting replicate the work of the masters. It wouldn't be long before neighbors began hearing his earliest funky house beats and deep, groovy baselines reverberating from within a garage somewhere in that small town. Over a decade later, the modern sounds of Mikie Smithers pulse within the bright orange walls of his Los Angeles studio. Surrounded by high-tech equipment, he recounts his origins. "I am from a small town and always knew I was a big city type person, so the first chance I got to move to a big city, I was there," Smithers says. After a lucky 13 years behind the decks that began in the City of Angels, he has no regrets. Spinning his way around the world, Smithers has made a name for himself internationally most notably with his residency on MTV's "The Grind" in Romania/Europe. "That was the time I thought, 'This is it. It's all worth it,'" Smithers recalls. "That was amazing in every way." He has spun in some of the biggest arenas, festivals and nightclubs in over six countries including Wet Grooves, the infamous pool party of WMC Miami and his music has been featured in "Put the Needle on the Record," the award-winning documentary on the WMC as well as in Playboy's "Benchwarmers" DVD and a Hot Tamales candy commercial. His sponsors include his own custom turntable slip mat from Sic Mats and clothing by Tank Farm. Q&A WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?.
